Why Azerbaijan should be on your travel bucket list

Unique history, fantastic food, as well as plenty of sights are awaiting travelers in Azerbaijan. The Land of Fire, combines the historical, mysterious and exotic with hospitable locals. There are many reasons to visit this little-explored nation in the Caucasus. Azerbaijan is a country located in the southern part of the Caucasus, at the crossroads of Southwest Asia and Southeastern Europe. Due to its particular geographic location, Azerbaijan is a real blend of Eastern and Western culture, with a deep and intriguing history. Why should visiting the capital of Azerbaijan be on your bucket list? Because Baku is a city that shocks and surprises anyone. As soon as you land, the first thing you see is the ultra-modern Airport.  Head to the city center to find a beautiful and historical old town, endless pubs and fine dining restaurants, luxury cars at every corner and the cleanest streets ever.  Petrol made it possible for Baku to be one of the modern and well-built cities in the world. The city offers a fantastic mix of old and new with futuristic skyline set against the ancient architecture of local mosques and other landmarks.

Azerbaijan is a tiny country, but it turns out that 9 out of the 11 climate zones can be found there: from high altitude Caucasian Mountains to vast hot deserts, green meadows and coastal areas. Besides, did you know that 50% of the mud volcanoes in the world are found in Azerbaijan? They are located around Qobustan, 50 kilometers from Baku.

One of the must-visit places in Azerbaijan, are the mountain villages near Quba, up in north of the country, where isolated valleys were historically so cut off from their neighbors that some of them even came up with their own languages. Homestay in those villages are going to be an unforgettable experience.  Hiking up here is absolutely spectacular, as many of the villages are surrounded on all sides by snow-capped mountains, while the grasslands below are either entirely pristine, or grazed by a flock of sheep or cows.

Another gorgeous town with another gorgeous artistic tradition is Lahic, whose cobblestone streets, stone houses, and occasional horseback-riding villager wandering through town make for quite a picturesque case for the benefits of small-town life. But it’s also famous for its copper-working craftsmen, who make everything from pots and pans to decorative plates and pitchers, and whose workshops you can also peruse while you’re visiting the town. It’s fascinating to see all the behind-the-scenes tools, displayed in workshops right on the main street, so you can walk right in.

The Caspian Sea, or the world’s largest lake, makes one of the best places to visit in Azerbaijan. The coastline stretches more than 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the border with Iran to the south and Dagestan in the north. Despite most the coast and beaches near Baku suffering from pollution, you can find beautiful resorts in Sumgait in the northern part of the Absheron Peninsula. Lankaran, four hours south of Baku towards the Iranian border, has a few resorts too.

Cultural diversity is one of the most attractive things about Azerbaijan.  This country  has been known as the homeland of diverse peoples and cultures, since the ancient times. This land served as some kind of bridge between Eastern culture, on the one hand, and the world, European culture – on the other hand. For the multinational, poly-confessional, multilingual Azerbaijan, this ideology is put forward by the historical reality itself. Indeed, Azerbaijan is a unique geographical, geopolitical and cultural space where the representatives of numerous national-ethnic groups live.

Azerbaijan culture combines the historical, religious and traditional evolving and molding over centuries to create the modern-day Azerbaijani. Some traits may be familiar and others foreign and contradictory, but this is what makes the country special.

Visit Azerbaijan, and experience some of the world’s best hospitality. Locals go to great lengths to help, and guests are a valued commodity. Stay in a homestay, where hosts treat guests with endless cups (or armuda) of tea, snacks and anything else. Ask for directions, and they might show rather than tell.

Our programs are very rich, covering, filled with historical sightsseeing, wine tasting, show programs, meetings with artists and craftsmen, master-classes in culture, cuisine and music. We’ll show you the best of Azerbaijan!
